Tarot.com's Advertising Policy Conflicted about Advertising Most of us do not care for advertising. But there is an economic reason that advertising exists across all media -- because as a society we have chosen it as the primary way to pay for the information we imbibe. As a people we have largely agreed to accept advertising in order to get free television, inexpensive newspapers and magazines, and the free use of websites. The spectrum of solutions runs from media that is totally supported by subscription (like pure cable TV) and media that is totally supported by advertising (weekly newspapers, most websites), and every mixture of the two. If a website can sustain itself through its own ecommerce (like Amazon, for instance), such a site may only advertise products that it sells. However, if Amazon began to be used strictly for book research (which accounts for a lot of its pageviews now), it would be forced by circumstances to feature 3rd-party advertisements. Most sites that sell products or charge a subscription fee, also carry advertising in order to pay for the infrastructure and labor it takes to serve millions of people per day -- most of whom never purchase anything. This is the case with Tarot.com, providing free horoscopes and divination-related features to millions of people every day. We learned that we could not afford to offer so many of our free features without 3rd-party advertising. These ads allow Tarot.com to continue pursuing our mission of providing the best do-it-yourself divination tools on the internet. |
