Color the year in earth tones, as major planets shift from the vibrant enthusiasm of fire signs Leo and Sagittarius to the more sedate domains of Virgo and Capricorn. Strict Saturn made the move from creative Leo to practical Virgo early last September, laying down its detailed rules for making life more efficient. Its passage through Leo emphasized expression of the heart, but now the taskmaster planet requires precise application of skills, or training in new ones, to stay on track. A tighter rein on our energies will reduce the minor mistakes that can blow up into major disasters with Saturn in this microscopic sign. Good intentions are nice, but results count more when earth signs dominate. Saturn is the make or break planet that indicates where and how work must be done if we are to be successful. Its presence in critical Virgo can be damaging if we focus on flaws and justify them with self-limiting labels. Rewards come when we transform our weaknesses into strengths with education, persistence and practice. Small steps can take us a long way when we find the right program and stick to it.
Expansive Jupiter moved from outgoing Sagittarius to ambitious Capricorn in December, setting the stage for major accomplishment when work comes before play. We're not seeing the future with a faraway look in our eyes, but are face-to-face with reality and the choices we need to make right now. Earthy Capricorn has lofty goals, but no illusions about reaching them by accident. Planning is not an option: it's a necessity. Jupiter and Saturn align in a harmonious 120-degree trine on January 21 that can set the tone for the year. Take time to match your goals with the means to reach them, set a schedule and stick to it. Jupiter is generous, but in Capricorn it favors those who practice what they preach.
Potent Pluto's 12-year stay in Sagittarius ends in 2008. The planet of transformation is leaving the sign of religion on January 25, and revisits it from June 14 to November 26 before settling into Capricorn for the next 16 years. The long-term implications are structural changes in the major institutions of society, such as government and business. On a personal level, it signals the need for each of us to take more authority in our own lives. This is not about living outside the law, but taking the principles learned over the past 12 years and applying them directly to our daily lives.
